"Turn your mastery of magic toward your defense"

A suggestion to make Sequencer Robes more useful for caster types

If sequencer robes gave a +1 armor bonus per X point in spellcraft, the robes might provide enough protection to be regular armor. A +1 AC/ 4 spellcraft would effectively scale in level, starting at +1 at lvl 1, resulting in +10 AC at level 40. An issue would be exactly what kind of armor bonus this would be. It seems like it might stack with/cover up or get lost with anything else providing deflection. As an armor bonus from an item, it probably wouldn't stack the way a monk's special levels do, nor would it be lost from being flat-footed. (not sure)

There could be a spellcraft check needed to use a spell of whatever level stored in the robe, to prevent non-mages from using epic summons or other high-level spells. Actually, if the caster wore the robe as everyday armor, there would be no need for a 'clear sequencer' tab, just re-equipping the sequencer robe would enough to clear the spells. Twisted Evil

I'm not even sure it's possible to hook skills into items this way, the scripters among us will have to take a look at the idea to see if might work.

This would definitely prevent any melee characters from using spells that they do not normally get.

I agree. I hate that melee characters are able to use sequencer robes. They should be casters only.

Wouldn't it just be easier to make the robes only usable by sorcs, wiz and other casters? then no need to add scripting to clear the sequencer when they are removed.

What classes would you limit the robes to? sorcerer, wizard, and druid?

if limit the robes to a specific class, it would have to be usable by all the casters(wizard, sorcerer, druid, bard, and cleric).

yes, they would have to be available to all caster types, wiz, sorc, cleric, even bard and ranger.

or, maybe have clerics robes only usable by clerics, only storing cleric spells, wizard robes only usable by wizards only storing wizard spells and so on. I would imagine that this option would involve a good deal more work.

In a way, there's the point: the classes that get spellcraft as a class skill would be able to make better use of the robes. Full casters, such as wizards and clerics, could benefit the most, where fighting & casting classes like paladins, rangers, and arcane archers can still use the robes' sequencer ability, with a lesser AC bonus unless spellcraft is kept maxed. The same would hold true of multiclass casters.

Regarding class restrictions,
If 2 ranks in spellcraft per spell level were required to retrieve a spell from a sequencer:
A fighter could put a max 4 into spellcraft at first level, on character creation. This fighter could use up to level 2 spells, which includes most stat buffs and some useful protection spells. Multiclassing would be necessary to use a level 3 spell or higher.
Getting level 8 spells from a sequencer would require spellcraft 16, which comes naturally to a casting class, and doesn't take much longer for a melee/casting class.

I think this would be better than currently having an ITEM that turns anyone of a certain LEVEL into casters. (of a certain type of spell (self))

Hopefully, making it so that anyone can use a sequencer, but not all can use it equally well, by taking advantage of existing rules.

Again, does anyone know if this is possible?

Maybe run an onequip script to check for one of the "main" spellcasters class, and if the PC doesn't have at least one level of that class, but has Ranger/Paladin, etc then the item is swapped out with a lesser robe, with lesser stats..
