 UMD Checks

So what does the number in the parenthesis mean? It seems to be random, but changes based on item and level.

OK, SO my Monk had jsut hit level 40, and has 46 UMD. I wanted to equip a level 50 item for some magic resistance (might have been a 45 or 46 item, i forget). Anyway... Epic Magic Talisman.

Tried to equip it with 46 UMD but under level. It told me "UMD check (17) failed!"


Ideas?

You have to be PURE rogue for the UMD to work for high level items. Without being pure rogue your umd check is a lot lower than the actual skill is. Most likely reason being that you could be any class and take 1 level of rogue and get the bonuses if it wasn't capped and the whole point of the way the UMD checks work is to help pure rogues do better.

Makes sense, but it hurts those of us that are CC rogues still. =P I did NOT take 1 level of rogue for UMD. IT was essential to my build. It was either that or SD, which would cost me 1 bonus feat, 5d6 sneak attack, and uncanny dodge. It would be ncie to see what we're actually rolling.

Warchief hit on it. The old "take one level of rogue" exploit is penalized. I won't reveal the precise calculations here, but UMD is modified by a rogue to non-rogue level comparison. If you take anything other than rogue, including prestige classes, UMD will not count as much.

As I wrote before, prestige classes have their own rewards, and people multi-class to gain particular advantages that are not available to pure-classed rogues, fighters, etc. Custom scripting in KT creates advantages for the pure-classed characters. Without the custom scripting, there's no good reason not to multi-class and take prestige classes. It becomes more about picking the right build (and we all know about certain uber combinations in NWN).

In KT, rogues are finally back in style, and I'm not talking just about level 1 rogue posers. I'm talking about pure rogues being useful again.
